SETTING UP THE RIGHT AND LEFT HAND GRIPS

Drumming should be a lot easier than most people make it out to be “the grip” I have found is the root cause of a grip, pardon my pun, of issues here I have laid out a simple step-by-step video on how to build the first building blocks of drumming.

DEVELOPING DOUBLES

Max Roach had said, and this is paraphrased, that drumming is all singles, doubles and buzzed strokes. Here is a simple and precise way of developing doubles in each hand and transitioning back to singles

REVERSE SPEED DRILL

Drummers old and young seem to have the need for speed. The term I like to use for speed is facility. Having speed is important but having facility to use the speed musically is key   The reverse speed drill works on adding speed from the end of a measure of four four time (using sixteenth notes) to the beginning of the measure. Hence the reverse speed drill. This drill will help you to add speed incrementally while having as little stress as possible. Relaxing is the key to speed, tensing up to use muscles to force the speed will render the speed useless.

5 AND 7 STROKE ROLLS

With this video I look at tournaments in the royal family they can give you some great ideas. Now only a few of the possibilities are shown here, but they should give you some ideas as to how you can use the rudiments to create sticking patterns.

FINGER CONTROL

When I was coming up many, many, many, many (OK you get the idea) years ago, I thought that finger control was an entire way of playing. In reality fingers are a crucial part of everything we do. Here is a commonsense approach in learning to becoming more aware of your fingers when you were playing.

SINGLE DRAG IDEAS

Whether you were aware of this rudiment or not my guess would be that your favorite drummer uses the single drag in they’re playing. This video shows you the single drag, how to play it and some very useful applications that you can transfer to the kit.

OPENING UP THE DRAG, THE PARADIDDLES AND RATAMACUES

Every rudiments can be tweaked or twisted for application on the drum kit. One of the coolest things in this video is how we look at the grace notes. Opening these up means to assign a rhythmical notation to the grace notes creating a sticking pattern as opposed to a classic sounding marching rudiment. This will have great implications for you on the drum kit and are some of my favorite things to play.
