Now that the initial stage of "WOW I have a drum set!!" has worn off, now what?
Tip #1
Have an idea of what you want to work on!
Keep track of what you are working on. Don't just randomly work on "stuff."
Get used to repetition, repetition is your friend.
Learn to set goals that are achievable.
It's step by step...And remember that YOU are your best friend through this journey. Be kind to yourself. Sometimes you are the only one who will be.
Tip #2
Finding a teacher that you connect with is HUGELY important. Trust needs to be there.
Your teacher should ALWAYS be willing to answer any questions you might have. And not with one or two word answers, that is where trust is built. You want to know that you are learning solid stuff, not just "busy work."
Tip #3
Here's the BAD NEWS. It is ultimately up to you. Yeah I know...but you are the one who wants to play. Become responsible to YOU, don't start to make excuses as to why you can't practice. Make the time- no one else will. And more bad news...improvement will come sometimes immediately and sometimes not so much. If that happens then just get up, don't let frustration get you. It's normal in anything you learn. And it's OK to walk away and live to practice another day.
Tip #4
Try not to start the practice session the same way each time. Unless you want to, it's up to you. Always be honest with yourself as to what you are doing.
And always end with playing for fun. Soloing, or work on a favorite song! So, Bash away!! lol
